Flourishing Goddess

Mama A.Free.Ka is a brilliant spark in today's poetic revolution. Her voice is said to possess the ancestors of all people in which she invokes as a reminder of the proverb, "I am, because you are." Mama A.Free.Ka started writing poetry as a sophomore in high school for her boyfriend. The boyfriend is now gone, but her gift for creating change through her poetry has flourished into a movement. She began reading her poetry in the dimly lit room of Mt. Zion's Calypso Café. It wasn't until she finished college and returned to Orlando where she began to indulge herself into the poetry scene. It was on Monday nights at Will's Pub, a night called Vocalization hosted by Solillaquists of Sound (S.O.S.), that Veronica Smith was renamed Mama A.Free.Ka. She could send hip-hop enthusiasts back in time to the Harlem Renaissance and Woodstock with her piece, Funk Me, which recognized the jazz and funk godmothers and godfathers of hip-hop. Telling the story of a graffiti writer in her piece, A.D. 2000/Afo.disiac, she sent listeners on a trip through the African plains of the Serengeti.

Mama A.Free.Ka had the great opportunity to tour with S.O.S. in the summer of 2004 in Chicago, Illinois and be a part of the 2004 Winter Park Say Anything Poetry Slam team. The team went on to battle some of United States and Canada's top wordsmiths in St. Louis, Missouri in the National Poetry Slam Championship, but not before winning the Broken Speech 2k4 Invitational. Mama A.Free.Ka has also won the 2k4 Individual World Poetry Slam Broken Speech Championship which will give her the chance to speak her mind in Worchester, Massachusetts in 2005. Now, as a member of the independent label Nonsense Records, she hopes to create vocal uprisings in the ears of her listeners and spread love worldwide. Viva La Revolution!
