Mauikai
Some may be living their life like it's golden but Mauikai is pure gold, literally. Born to a Jewish father and Cuban mother, she was an only child that thrived for the center of attention that came only with a stage, a spotlight and a microphone. She discovered her talent and passion for the performance at the tender age of 4 during a cruise vacation where she did a full rendition of Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation. By the time she turned 13, Mauikai found herself sneaking into late night clubs, along with her very supportive mother, to quench her thirst of dancing to salsa music after being inspired by the movie Dance With Me. But she soon tired of professional dancing, and decided to pursue her dream within music.
It took a sprinkle of inspiration from her favorite singer, Aaliyah, which was the catalyst that pushed her to write her first song, Blind. "I only had 2 years to make it" proclaims Mauikai. Knowing that her idol had become famous at the age of 15, it motivated her to save the money she received for Christmas to record her first demo. $500 and a dream were ripped off from her when she went back to get her "supposedly mixed and mastered" demo, only to see that the studio was gone. As her first experience with the entertainment industry, it was after learning this valuable lesson that she talked her parents into letting her complete high school a year early, which sent her on a journey destined for Orlando, Florida.
