S.K.I.P.
“Autobiographicology"
Format: CD/Digital
Released: 8/21/2007 (Nonsense Records)
Those who feel the need to box the genre of hip hop into a set of confining "do's and don'ts" would do well to steer clear of the artist known as S.K.I.P. With his latest album Autobiographicology (Nonsense Records), the Orlando emcee eschews the limiting constraints of genre and format to deliver a collection of songs that challenge the conventions of what a hip hop record should sound like in 2007.
With a musical background equally steeped in spoken word, hip hop, funk, and ska, S.K.I.P. takes the listener on a mental journey through the world in which he inhabits, expressing the frustration and paranoia stemming from the society in which we live and firmly declaring his individual voice at the center of the storm. Produced entirely by Swamburger of Anti/Epitaph recording artists Sol.illaquists of Sound, the album offers a bevy of soundscapes, ranging from hip hop to funk to electronic experimentation- sometimes all within the same song! Augmented by the tasteful addition of live instrumentation and an ever-present pulsating rhythm, the songs on Autobiographicology meld together to create a collective listening experience, a quality sorely lacking in most recent releases.
From the jazzy shuffle of "SomeBright (ft. Mauikai)" to the frenetic jitters of "The QUESTion" to the mind-meldingly personal title track, S.K.I.P. has crafted a record that transgresses conventional clichés and embraces a free-spirited, thinking-man's hip hop- one that deserves the attention it so aggressively demands.
